IABM Confirm Broadcast / Pro Video Downturn

According to a recent report by the IABM , broadcast and pro video equipment manufacturers are finally reporting that sales are down and confirming what SCRI has already determined from extensive end user facility surveys.

The IABM states that "With two excellent years in 2007 and 2008, the broadcast and media technology industry is enduring a difficult year in 2009 with limited confidence for a rapid recovery.

The industry is naturally affected by a four-year cycle, driven by major television events such as the Olympic Games and the US presidential election which involve huge capital expenditures on new equipment. The completion of this cycle in 2008, followed immediately by the economic downturn, has led to much more difficult operating conditions for suppliers.

In this survey, carried out in May 2009, 68% of respondents felt that next quarter will be the same or better than the last quarter, but 43% stated that confidence for next year is diminished or diminished significantly. Looking ahead six months there was a broad spread of opinion: 29% thought things will be improving, 31% that they will be about the same, and 24% saw a continuing deterioration in the situation.

While customer deferrals are seen as the major limiting factor in business growth – cited by 45% of the survey – only 8% put the blame on the availability of finance. The major impact of the credit squeeze is seen in the manufacturers’ own ability to fulfil orders: a year ago only 9% of manufacturers surveyed quoted finance as a constraint on output; today it has quadrupled to 36%. The need to control costs is also likely to show an impact on future innovation, with 17% of manufacturers reducing R & D investment."

“Looking forward, suppliers are circumspect and, in aggregate, believe that things will be about the same in six months’ time,” said Jonathan Dunn of Ernst & Young. “Perhaps the most worrying aspect of this survey is that output is being limited by the scarcity of credit and finance. This is indicative of today’s tougher banking environment, and by the predominance of small and medium-sized businesses in the broadcast technology supply chain.”

2009-2010 Broadcast Pro Video Marketplace Reports

These forecasts are in line with SCRI’s 2009-2010 Broadcast / Pro Video Marketplace Report based on extensive surveys of end user facilities, although end users have been reporting a decline in '08 as well as 09. Specifically SCRI is reporting that equipment purchases by end-users among cable & TV broadcast stations as well as film & video production / post and corporate and institutional video (govt. medical, educational) sectors for the 25 Product Types tracked by SCRI, was down from $10.3 billion in ’07 to $10.1 billion in 2008 and projected to decline to $9.9 billion in '09 . However, SCRI forecasts for 2010 put the total market up by around 4.5% from the low of ’09 to around $10.4 billion. Key drivers include the expected economic upturn and the concomitant impact of delayed purchases having to be made along with the migration to HDTV.

SCRI's 2009-2010 Broadcast Pro Video Marketplace Reports include a Macro Industry Overview and Analysis of these factors, a Micro Quantitative Data report showing data for all 25 products in units and dollars and by vertical end-user market going back seven years. In addition detailed Product Reports covering 25 product types discuss in detail and present the data showing market size and growth, by vertical market brand shares and product type breakouts.

SCRI is the only research firm to have a 22 year track record of conducting this survey annually. Data is obtained direct form end-users in each of the seven vertical end-user markets, and contains over 2,500 such survey responses, a projectable base for SCRI estimates and projections. This methodology is in direct contrast to many other research reports in this industry, some of whom offer “Global Reports” based on limited qualitative interviews with manufacturers and end-users rather than comprehensive quantitative survey data that is statistically reliable. SCRI is not affiliated with NAB or any other trade organization or publication as are some research firms offering reports. Hence SCRI can present an unbiased view of the industry. This is evident in the two years where SCRI has reported sales declines in spite of that being an unpopular finding.
