Network Electronics Routing System Provides Long-Distance Solution for WBZs New BureauWorcester, MA (March 15, 2006) – When WBZ was looking for a systems integrator to install their new Worcestor News Bureau they looked no further than their own backyard. The Network selected By Request Communications, Inc., a broadcast systems integration company based in Marlborough, MA whose credits include numerous news bureaus and remote camera systems across the country. In turn, By Request Communications turned to Network Electronics to supply a routing system to meet the CBS affiliates’ routing demands.WBZ’s requirements included the ability to switch between multiple camera positions both inside and outside the building, as well as the capability to switch numerous audio signals independently of the video signals. Both the main studio camera and a roof top weather camera needed to be remotely controlled via a cable modem connection from 45 miles away. “WBZ’s new bureau posed some unusual challenges including remote control of multiple cameras via IP,” said David Haralambou, president of By Request Communications. “We configured a Network Electronics V1602 routing system, including their Ethernet gateway, which provided the flexibility we were looking for..” Network’s ETH-CON Ethernet gateway and protocol converter allows WBZ to control their Worcestor Bureau system from the comfort of their Boston area studio facilities. Using a standard windows PC, WBZ technicians are able to route both video and audio independently to two destinations. One destination feeds the transmission path back to their studio, while the other feeds their tape machine/editor systems at the bureau. This allows any available camera positions to be recorded locally and included in pieces they may be working on. The ETH-CON lets WBZ send commands via IP over the Internet to the system in the field. Of course numerous security features were employed to safeguard the system. The included Network Electronics’ Thor control software allows sources and destinations to be identified with useful names that actually mean something to the technicians and even add icons! Technicians can use the icons to drag and drop a source to one or more destinations, even audio and video splits are easy to accomplish. IP based control panels can be added at the studio for future expansion and flexibility. When used in combination with Network Electronics V106DEQ video DAs, the V1602 routing system enables WBZ’s technicians to handle just about any situation the news department can throw at them.
